What Cheshire Home Means To Me
By Justin Sherwood, Trustee
"My story began in the summer of 1992, as a seventeen-year old with a life-changing personal experience - a spinal cord injury resulting in paraplegia.
What was I going to do? What was next, and how could I move forward after my injury? I felt a deep sense of loss, confusion, and uncertainty.
Ultimately, I realized I had to accept my injury, and make some early decisions about my life. The first decision I made was I could not embark on such a journey without the support of my family and friends.
The second decision was I wanted to graduate with my high school class, and finally, I would never let my injury limit me. The life I desired became a reality, as I married and purchased a home, had children, began a twenty-three year career, traveled the world, and became a wheelchair athlete.
These wonderful things became the best parts of my life not because it was easy, but because of the support structure I had around me and the decision to never let my injury limit or define me. I was drawn to join the Cheshire Home Board of Trustees in 2017 because Cheshire's focus is on driving independence for each resident, empowering each person to reach their maximum potential.
I know firsthand the challenges of living with a disability, and this provides me with a unique perspective to help residents undertsnad that they can achieve independence, and that they will truly feel happiness and optimism when they reach that day.
