Cheshire Home was founded in Florham Park, New Jersey, in order to serve young, physically disabled adults, and empower them to lead independent, meaningful lives. We are connected, by philosophy, to the international organization established in England by Lord Leonard Cheshire, a World War II R.A.F. pilot who opened his doors to disabled veterans. Since 1948, hundreds of Cheshire Homes have been established worldwide, each operating independently, all serving people coping with different types of disabilities.
The Florham Park Cheshire Home admits residents between the ages of 18 and 55, meeting the critical needs of young, physically disabled individuals who could otherwise be inappropriately discharged from hospitals to traditional geriatric nursing homes. We are one of only 24 specialized care facilities licensed by the state of New Jersey, and the only one that addresses this specific age population. Our 35 residents are provided with a full slate of medical, vocational, educational, transportation, recreation, physical therapy, dietary, and counseling programs and services.
Key moments in our history took place in 1986, when we opened the first of two community-based homes for disabled individuals who are able to live more independently, and in 1988, when we established our onsite Community Resource Center. The “Programs” and “Community Homes” pages of this website offer additional information about these vital expansions, and we welcome your further inquiries regarding our unique programs and services. |
